TOYOTA BOSHOKU TÜRKİYE AND TB SEWTECH TURKEY MAKE SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT FOR NET ZERO TARGET
16.09.2024
Toyota Boshoku Türkiye and TB Sewtech Turkey have established a 10 MWp solar power plant on a 120-decare site in Erdemli, Mersin, in line with their goal of becoming net zero. With an investment of 12.5 million euros, the facility will supply all the energy used in production for both companies from solar power.
By taking this significant step with a 12.5 million euro investment in the solar power plant located in Erdemli, Mersin, Toyota Boshoku Türkiye and TB Sewtech Turkey have advanced their commitment to environmental sensitivity and sustainability. The investment aims to reduce carbon footprints and lower energy costs through the use of an eco-friendly energy source.
The 10 MWp facility, which is the first of its kind in Toyota Boshoku’s global network, was commissioned on May 14, 2024, and since that date, has been meeting all the electricity needs for both companies' production processes with solar energy.
A Major Step Towards a Sustainable Future
During the opening ceremony held on September 10, 2024, with the participation of the Mersin protocol, Toyota Boshoku Europe Vice President Satoshi Yamanouchi stated, "Today is a very special and proud day for Toyota Boshoku Türkiye and TB Sewtech Turkey. The Solar Power Plant, established with the responsibility of contributing to a sustainable future, is an important step towards providing our energy from 100% renewable sources and achieving our environmental sustainability goals. This Solar Power Plant, implemented in the field of renewable energy with the aim of leaving a more livable world for future generations, forms a significant part of Toyota Boshoku and TB Sewtech Turkey’s sustainability strategy and reinforces our leading position in the industry".
A New Era in Energy Efficiency
Toyota Boshoku Türkiye President Hakan Konak commented, "As you know, the climate crisis poses a threat to our future and presents a global problem that we all must address. Each sector, institution, and even each of us has roles and responsibilities in solving this major issue.
In this context, as Toyota Boshoku Türkiye and TB Sewtech Turkey , we are continuing our efforts to achieve “Net Zero” Emissions by 2030 for Scope 1 & Scope 2 and by 2040 for Scope 3. We have developed a comprehensive strategy for achieving this goal, ranging from measuring to reducing and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce emissions from our production activities, we launched our Solar Power Plant in Mersin in May 2024 as part of our green transformation and renewable energy usage. This allows us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and source all the energy we use in production from renewable sources. I believe this investment will serve as an encouraging guide for all sector stakeholders."
Hakan Konak also mentioned that they balance the energy produced with the energy consumed using a metering offset method, adding,
"In addition to our solar plant, we continue our efforts to make our energy usage more efficient through engineering approaches and digital tools to reduce energy consumption. We are raising awareness among our employees about energy savings and developing sustainable practices with our suppliers."
President Konak emphasized that with this investment, they have become the first company in the TBT global network to source all its production energy from solar power. "Furthermore, we aim to further reduce emissions from our logistics operations by converting our product delivery vehicles to electric ones. With all these activities, Toyota Boshoku Türkiye and TB Sewtech Turkey will continue to work together with our stakeholders towards a better future, taking steps towards our ‘Net Zero Emissions’ goal, and acting with innovation and environmental awareness."
